CM – Vikings move up to 8th place in the NFC playoff race with Saints loss

0

One day after falling from seventh to ninth in the NFC playoff race, the Vikings moved up to at least eighth on Monday evening when New Orleans lost 3-20 to Miami.

Seven teams will reach the playoffs in the NFC. With two games remaining, the Vikings (7-8) contest No. 6 San Francisco (8-7) and No. 7 Philadelphia (8-7). The Vikings would lose a head-to-head tiebreaker against the 49ers but win one against the Eagles.

Atlanta (7-8) is No. 9 in the NFC and the Saints (7-8) are No. 10. The Vikings, who lost 30:23 at home to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, would get one Win tiebreaker against the Falcons and it remains to be seen if they would hold one over New Orleans.

If the Vikings lose (12-3) at Green Bay on Sunday night and the Saints defeat Carolina (5-10) at home earlier that day, New Orleans would win in the fourth tiebreak, which is the strength of the win. Otherwise, Minnesota would win it.

But if the Vikings lose to the Packers, tiebreakers don’t matter. After the game against Green Bay, Minnesota will end the season on January 9th at home against Chicago (5-10th).

« I’m just watching one game, the next, » said head coach Mike Zimmer about his team’s playoff scenarios.

The 49ers finish with home games against Houston (4-11) on Sunday and away against Rams (11-4) on January 9th. The Eagles close with games on Sunday in Washington (6-9) and at home on January 9 against Dallas (11-4).

The Falcons close with games in Buffalo (9-6) on Sunday and at home against the Saints on January 9th. And the Saints, as mentioned, close with Carolina and Atlanta.
