CM – Vixens scores the first win of the year

The Melbourne Vixens have booked their first win of the season, ousting the Queensland Firebirds in an exciting competition at the Nissan Arena.

Jemma Mi Mi exorcised memories of last year’s hurtful indigenous round but failed to give the Queensland Firebirds the victory they needed to save their season. Debutant Rahni Samason presented the Melbourne Vixens with a win after last summer.

Mi Mi failed on the pitch in the indigenous round last year, but played 48 minutes in a thriller at the Nissan Arena.

With a tie of 64: 64, when the final buzzer sounded, the match appeared to be due for overtime, but the umpires had imposed a penalty shortly before time. Samason converted a two-point shot to give the Vixens a 66-64 win, first win of the season.

The Vixens hadn’t won a match in the first four rounds of the season, and while they had improved they were a completely different outfit with Samason on the pitch.

Samason was substituted on after an injury by Vixen’s goalkeeper Emily Mannix, and although she ended up being a match MVP as a training partner, there is no guarantee that she will be on the team for the future stays.

« It’s my job to shoot and I like to be as accurate as possible. My philosophy is that after the game I don’t have to do as much defensive work when I bring them in, » said she went to Channel 9.

But she said « nothing » crossed her mind as she delivered the winning shot.

« I like to have an empty head. I find, when I think about it, I’m just getting a little nervous, « she said.

The Firebirds performed in the Er The opening break was 24:16 and seemed ready to take an easy win, but someone forgot to hand over the script to the audience.

The Vixens left just two points behind at halftime and held their heads after a third period better than the home team to dump a full crowd at the Nissan Arena.

The defeat is extremely disappointing for the Firebirds, who have only one win after five rounds and can barely afford to drop another game if they want to reach the final.

After Mi Mi wasn’t on the pitch at all in the indigenous round last year, he played 48 minutes in defeat.

And every aspect of the indigenous celebration was planned and authentic. Mi Mi’s presence was far from tokenistic. The midfielder was among the best of the Firebirds, allowing them to play at an accelerated pace that eventually showed on the Vixens.

It’s well documented that the Firebirds missed the mark in the Indigenous round last year – not only when Mi Mi did not accept that, but initially did not understand how much they did something wrong.

However, the game on Saturday showed how much things have changed. As well as leading the team on the pitch and playing an important role in the game, Mi Mi was instrumental in planning pre-game ceremonies, from dances to a Welcome To Country that included the Diamond Spirit members -Program by Netball Queensland.

Proof of the pudding will be that the number of indigenous players in the league will grow in the years to come.

Mannix’s injury allowed Melbourne to take a surprise move and get the shooter Rahni Samason to start the game alongside Mwai Kumwenda.

The Vixens have fought for consistency in the shooting range after the retirement of experienced goalkeepers Caitlin Thwaites and Tegan Philip. Kaylia Stanton is struggling with her confidence and teenage Ruby Barkmeyer is still developing.

But Samason’s nerveless performance – she leveled the game in the third quarter before scoring the winning goal after the summer – was superb. </ The 23-year-old has been training with the Vixens since 2018. After completing an ACL, spending a year in recovery, and missing last season due to COVID-19, she missed the Vixens main playlist when the roster was reduced to 10.

As a training partner, she becomes likely to stop playing if Mannix – a Diamonds squad member – returns from injury unless another member of the contracted squad has to miss a match.
