CM – Wait, ‘Hamilton’ is an Emmys nominee?

0

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s « Hamilton » won 11 Tonys, a Grammy, a Pulitzer, a Kennedy Center Honor and more awards than we can mention here. And now the film version of the musical, put together from three stage appearances from 2016 with most of the original cast, is available for the Emmys one year after its premiere at Disney. « Hamilton » was placed in the special category for recorded varieties. However, since it meets the 75-minute threshold to qualify for a television film, its cast was technically eligible to compete in the television film / limited series acting categories. And they competed: Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. received Emmy nominations along with five members of the supporting cast: Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff and Anthony Ramos.

The Television Academy’s decision to include the ensemble in the main acting categories felt like overwhelming for some, leading to executives grumbling behind the scenes at competing networks and streaming platforms. And with many of the cast hiring Tonys for these performances five years ago, it felt like they had already received their reward.

The confusion and controversy in the categories marks the end of the bumpy price saga of the « Hamilton » film. The film academy decided it wasn’t eligible for the Oscars. It appeared at the Golden Globes, nominated for Best Musical / Comedy, and Miranda’s starring role as Alexander Hamilton. It was eligible for the Screen Actors Guild Awards in all categories, but only Daveed Diggs managed to win an award.

With a view to the future, « Hamilton » is a favorite for winning this special variety prize, which has been recorded in advance. After all the other honors, does Miranda need an Emmy? Uh … probably not as much as the Emmys need Miranda in the audience for the ceremony.
