January 4th (UPI) – The Washington Football team will announce its new name and logo on February 2nd, team president Jason Wright said in a press release on Tuesday.
The team also announced that it will unveil the new nickname on NBC’s Today show.

January 4th (UPI) – The Washington Football Team will announce its new name and logo on February 2nd, team president Jason Wright said in a press release on Tuesday.
The NFC franchise East announced in July 2020 that it would change its name to Washington Football Team and withdraw its former controversial nickname and Native American branding. The team announced that same month that it would be calling itself Washington Football Team until it found a new nickname.
In September, CEO Tanya Snyder announced the final eight eligible names: Red Hogs, Defenders, Armada , Presidents, Brigade, Commanders, RedWolves and Washington Football Team.
The team announced in August that their search was limited to three finalists, but didn’t say which names made it into the final.
Wright said that RedWolves or Wolves would not be selected due to branding issues and that the team « didn’t want to risk taking a path that could be littered with legal obstacles ».
« We understood early on that wolves – or a variation of them – are one of our fan favorites, » Wright said. « As I’ve been saying all along, we take feedback from our fans seriously and because of your interest in this name, we’ve put Wolves on a list of options that you can fully explore.
“However, when we looked at Wolves, we became aware of a remarkable challenge: trademarks of other teams would limit our ability to make the name our own. And without Wolves, variations like RedWolves would not have been viable for them either. « And other reasons. »
Washington has received more than 40,000 fan submissions via WashingtonJourney.com with ideas for the new name. The team is planning to sell its Burgundy – And keep gold colors.
Washington is 6-10 this season and ranks third in NFC East, winning the league for the first time since 2015 last season.
Washington ends its 2021-22 regular season against the New York Giants at 1 p.m. EST Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
