Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp didn’t try to hide his disappointment as his substitutes didn’t shine in the 2-0 Carabao Cup win in Preston.

Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi fired Liverpool in the quarter-finals at Deepdale, but not before the championship team faced a big surprise.

The memories of Manchester United’s 5-0 defeat on Sunday were still in the minds of traveling Liverpool supporters, but there were few Marks on the pitch when Jürgen Klopp switched all 11 players and thus received a radically different representation.

When Minamino converted a cross from Neco Williams in the 62nd minute, it was Liverpool’s first shot on goal after Preston in the first half had pulled several saves out of Adrian.

Origi snapped six minutes before the end, but the gap between Klopp’s unscrupulous stars and their humble ones His backups were obvious, as Liverpool barely bared their teeth against a 19th in the championship and had several changes of their own.

« We didn’t play well, that’s true, » admitted Klopp. « We started pretty well, but then we completely lost the structure and that was the problem.

» We were too lively, too desperate to get the ball. Everyone fell and we didn’t have enough players between the lines, we didn’t always have someone behind the lines.

« That’s normal, it can absolutely happen if you don’t play a lot together. These guys train a lot together, but they don’t play that much, so it can absolutely happen. That makes it difficult, especially because Preston wasn’t.  » cared too much about any kind of possession, they kicked the ball for a long time and fought for these balls.

« Suddenly they get set pieces, the atmosphere comes, we lose the momentum, they get the momentum. Football games are like that. Me I’ve seen a lot of nice individual performances, as a team we can play better, but individually I’ve seen some really nice performances and that’s absolutely ok.

Klopp praised Minamino on a night when he was clearly disappointed with the efforts of some of his fringe players.

« Taki is high quality, » he added. « He’s an amazing moment, a lot better in terms of training than he showed tonight, but he was the most dangerous player and scores a goal, which is really important.

» He understands our game very well too, so you can throw in and he can be a big part of our football right away.
