January 6 (UPI) – A person in the south west of England contracted a case of avian flu that was transmitted through contact with sick animals, the country’s health authority confirmed on Thursday.
The UK Health Security Agency said Animal-to-human transmission of bird flu is « very rare and has only occurred a few times in this jurisdiction ».
The infected person was in « very close, regular contact with a large number of infected birds that they kept in and around their home, » said the authority.
The agency also said it has not been able to determine if the person is infected with the H5N1 strain of influenza.
The UK has had a large number of outbreaks of the H5N1 strain recently seen in birds across the country.
The Animal and Phytosanitary Authority and UK Chief Veterinary Officer have alerted bird owners across the country.
The case was discovered after the APHA found an outbreak of the H5N1 strain in the flock of birds of the infected person.
Although the risk of avian flu for the general public is very small, we know that some strains do Have the potential to spread to humans and so we have robust systems in place to detect them early and take action, « said Isabel., Chief Scientific Officer of UKHSA Oliver.
« There is currently no evidence that this strain, discovered in the UK, can spread from person to person, but we know viruses are constantly evolving and we are continuing to monitor the situation closely. We have followed all of that person’s contacts and have not identified any retransmissions. »
The infected person isolates himself and suffers from mild flu-like symptoms. The health department also keeps track of anyone who has been in close contact with the person.
