Jon Armstrong has been there before, but it is a whole new experience for William Creighton as he competes for his first World Rally Championship in Croatia on Friday morning.
Armstrong and Creighton have signed up for the World Junior Series, a five-lap competition where the prize fund includes a brand new Ford Fiesta Rally2 for the winner to drive in the 2022 championship.
Will be JWRC like all other competitors in the category they will be on board identical front-wheel Rally4 fiestas supplied by the Polish division of M-Sport Ford.
While the Fermanagh man Armstrong has already done a handful of WRC rallies, the 23-year-old Creighton has from Moira took the courageous step to break away from the British and Irish competition and test himself on a different level.
Creighton, who has been a serial winner in the whole of Great Britain since his school days nnien, supported by Motorsport Ireland’s Academy, admits he’s not sure what to expect at one of the newest laps in the WRC series.
« I know it will be very different from anything what i did before. I don’t underestimate how challenging this is going to be, it’s the World Rally Championship, « he said.
Former e-sports world champion Armstrong, one of the few drivers who is as at home with a simulator as with real-time -Rallies, last year’s JWRC series started, but a serious fall ended his season prematurely.
Armstrong (26) is a consultant to rally game developer Codemasters and supports his campaign.
« My career change in the game industry has opened some doors and opportunities for my real rally career, « he said.
» I’ve always wanted to be at WRC level and JWRC seemed like the best option to advance my career. The goal is to win, and I think I can. «
