Roger Federer has often been the crowd favorite on Center Court for two decades, but the eight-time Wimbledon champion will have to hand that role to British opponent Cameron Norrie on Saturday.
Federer’s clinical performance against Richard Gasquet on Thursday was in contrast to a flawed performance by Australian world number one Ashleigh Barty.
The 25-year-old will bid in her third round game on Saturday to reassure her fans that she will win the title on the 50th anniversary of the first Wimbledon crown of her indigenous Australian Evonne Goolagong Cawley.
The victory over Katerina Siniakova in 64th place, who is in the last 32 for the third time in her career, could bring her into a clash of the fourth round with the French Bringing Open winner Barbora Krejcikova.
Federer, at 39 years the oldest player who has made it into the fourth round of the men in 45 years, will not feel too much take care of the loyalty of the audience as long as they get under the last 16.
« I hope that the audience will participate in the last 20 years, regardless of whether they are for him or me, » said Federer.
« Cam is a good guy and is having a wonderful year. He did well here, but it’s time for him to go out! «
Norrie has played Federer once before – » He absolutely blew me away « (6-1, 6-1) – and remembers of the surreal atmosphere at the Hopman Cup 2018.
« I went out first. Then I remember looking back and he went along as if the whole stadium was dark and dark and the spotlight was on him.
« He came out to play against me. I felt like I was in a video game to play against Roger Federer, « added Norrie.
Federer’s half of the draw looks more treacherous than that of defending champion Novak Djokovic, with two of the younger generation Daniil Medvedev and Germany’s Alex Zverev possibly lurking further down.
Fritz did wonders to be able to compete at all, as he only left the French Open weeks ago with a knee injury in a wheelchair.
The game of the day on the men’s side could, however, between the stylish Canadian 16-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime and the fiery Australian entertainer Nick Kyrgios.
Auger-Aliassime was compared to the late American legend Arthur Ashe at a young age and there are signs with a second round win in Halle against Federer for making the 20-year-old come to terms with such expectations.
« Nick is a great player, a great En tertainer, « said Auger-Aliassime. “I think he’s good for tennis.”
Barty is just the opposite of her compatriot, who rarely shows her emotions on the court, however she plays.
She draws the positives from her ability to stamp it out and win against Anna Blinkova in the second round.
« There are those days when some days you feel like you’re six feet tall and you can’t miss the box, » she said .
« On other days you feel like you’re three feet long, just getting over the net is a struggle.
» That’s half the battle in sport, finding a way if it doesn’t feel so great. «
If Barty stayed in three-foot mode, either Coco Gauff or the 2018 champion Angelique Kerber could benefit.
Gauff and Kerber should meet in the round of 16, but the American has to beat the Slovenian Kaja Juvan, while the German meets Aliaksandra Sasnovich from Belarus.
Gauff, who are on the thunder Stag basking in the revival of « Coco Mania » on Center Court admits that at 17 she has to curb her natural instinct for attacking tennis.
« I think sometimes it’s the best shot, just hit the To make room compared to the line or something, « she said.
» That’s what I have to fight myself with because my instinct is to make it big. «
