New Delhi: Indian tobogganer Shiva Keshavan will try to become a member of the Athletes’ Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the elections during the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The 40-year-old six-time Winter Olympics was after the board meeting of the world association on Saturday in Athens as one of 17 candidates for two vacant positions in the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission.

« Ten female and seven male athletes from 17 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), six sports and five continents will be accepted fighting for the two vacant seats in the commission, « said a statement by the IOC with a list of 17 candidates.

The Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Rajeev Mehta, confirmed that she was using the name of Keshavan , the Olympic Winter Games torch bearer for the country.

Keshavan has been participating in the Men’s Luge Individuals since the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. In addition, he was Asian champion in 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017 and holds the Asian record in luge.

As the link between the athletes and the IOC, the committee consists of a maximum of 23 members (12 members directly elected by their colleagues and a maximum of 11 appointed members) who have a term of eight years.

Elections will be held at each edition of the Olympic Games, with four members elected for each Summer Game and two for each Winter Game.

Athletes participating in the 2022 Winter Olympics Participants in Beijing can vote for their representatives in the Olympic villages from January 27th (the opening day of the villages) to February 16th.

The elected athletes will be the previous IOC AC member Hayley Wickenheiser (Canada ), who will end their term of office at the end of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, and will fill the position that became vacant due to the resignation of Ole Einar Bjorndalen (Norway) in 2016.
