World number 1, Ashleigh Barty from Australia, started her 2022 season with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over the American Coco Gauff on Wednesday in the Adelaide International.
The two-time Grand Slam winner lost here in the round of 16 against the American Danielle Collins in 2021 . Adelaide is warming up for the Australian Open, which starts on January 17th.
17-year-old Gauff defeated an injured Barty in Rome last year.
« This old body could be a little sore tomorrow I think, « said Barty after Wednesday’s game. « It’s great to get out of here and I think I played a pretty good match considering it was the first match in a couple of months. Coco played great, she made me hit a lot of balls tonight and I feel like I got better and better as the game went on. «
In another action, Shelby Rogers eliminated number 3 seed Maria Sakkari from Greece 7-6 (5), 2-6 , 6-4. She prepared a quarter-final match with number 7 seed Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova. Kaja Juvan from Slovenia upset the number 2 seeded Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus 7-6 (6), 6-1.
The number 2 seed Simona Halep from Romania had a good start and defeated Destanee Aiava from Australia in hers Opening game in Melbourne with 6: 4, 6: 2.
The number 3 Veronika Kudermetova from Russia had it much more difficult to get through than she got from Slovak Viktoria Kuzmova with 7: 6 (4), 7: 6 (6 ) was pushed to its limits in her first round match.
Anna Bondar from Hungary ousted the Czech Katerina Siniakova, the number 8 seeded, 7-5, 7-6 (8). Madison Brengle also moved on with a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) win against Nao Hibino from Japan.
Claire Liu recovered from a setdown to defeat number 8 seed Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in Melbourne.
Another American, Madison Keys, was also victorious, a 6-3, 7-6 (2) winner over Harriet Dart of Great Britain.
In another action, number 3 seeded Daria Kasatkina advanced against her Russian compatriot Anna Kalinskaya 6: 1 and 3: 0 in one go. Kamilla Rakhimova from Russia defeated Greet Minnen from Belgium 7-5, 7-5, and Aliaksandra Sasnovich from Belarus defeated Xinyu Wang from China 6-4, 6-2.
