CM – Yankees’ Aroldis Chapman was placed on IL after a shaky outing with elbow problems

The Yankees placed themselves with an infection of the left elbow on the end of the 10-day IL Saturday and called on Nick Nelson to take his place in the bullpen before continuing a series against the Mariners in the Bronx. </ Chapman threw 30 throws at the Mariners on Thursday, fighting with his fastball command. He recorded his seventh straight save, but first flirted with disaster, allowing a walk and single to get the go-ahead on the plate before stepping out on left field with a deep fly ball.

The left-handed was one of only two helpers who failed to appear in Friday’s Bullpen game as nine arms together created a 3-2 win.

Chapman’s absence comes at a time when the Yankees, while They are pursuing a playoff course and playing their best baseball of the season, already missing Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery and Gary Sanchez due to COVID-19 logs.

After a strong start to the season, Chapman went through a brutal phase from June to early July in which he was marked for 14 earned runs over 5 2/3 innings with nine walks to six strikeouts. He had since started getting his season back on track, despite Thursday’s dizzying parade indicating something was wrong.
