CM – Yankees call Miguel Andujar amid Gio Urshela’s injury uncertainty

The Yankees remembered the 26-year-old from Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre ahead of Friday’s season opener against the Nationals in The Bronx, the day after Gio Urshela sustained an unspecified knee injury.

Urshela is currently not on the way to the IL. Andujar could fill in on the third base if Urshela only needs a few days off – the only other option would be Tyler Wade.

Right-handed Albert Abreu was chosen to join the SWB to make room for Andujar on the squad. The Yankees had played with a short bench after placing Rougned Odor on the IL with a sprained left knee.

It has been a while since Andujar had major league success. After Andujar took the stage in 2018 when he met 27 Homer and finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year, named Angel’s two-way star Shohei Ohtani, he suffered a shoulder injury in early 2019 that affected his season. That allowed Urshela to get his shot on third base.

Urshela was a revelation, and Andujar has yet to show that he can take on the versatile role he needs to stay with the Yankees in the majors.

After Andujar suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome in his right wrist during spring training, he was sent to the other site in Scranton. He played well in three games with SWB at the start of the minor league season, looks good on the plate – he’s 6 against 15 with three homers – and in the left field. He played seven innings on third base during the SWB game in Syracuse on Thursday night after Urshela was injured in the Yankees’ loss to the Astros.

The Yankees made much of the infield behind them earlier in the season which is partly due to the absence of first base player Luke Voit after knee surgery in spring training. Voit will be back from his rehab at SWB soon, probably no later than Tuesday, when the Yankees open a road trip against Tampa Bay.

Aaron Boone has repeatedly said that the Yankees don’t want to rush Voit back. Voit, who led the majors with 22 home runs in the shortened 2020 season, only played two games during his assignment with SWB – and only started one game in first base.
