Hydrogen-electric aircraft developer ZeroAvia and de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that allows ZeroAvia to develop a power plant program using its hydroelectric engines in old and new aircraft de Havilland Canada models.

Once the terms of the deal are finalized, de Havilland Canada will have the option to purchase 50 ZeroAvia hydrogen-electric motors, ZeroAvia said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Linefit program is designed for de Havilland’s Dash 8-400 turboprop aircraft, which is currently operated by more than 600 customers. The companies plan to develop a service bulletin for device type approval for new aircraft using ZeroAvia’s 2 MW powertrain (ZA2000).

To test its capabilities, the companies will work together on a demonstrator model, with which you want to accelerate the certification process and address customers. It will also help with route selection and these companies hope to be commercially available by 2027.

“The partnership with de Havilland Canada puts ZeroAvia on a defined path for installation in new airframes and signals the appetite of OEMs, so quickly Switch to certified, zero-emission propulsion systems as possible, ”said Val Miftakhov, CEO of ZeroAvia, in the same statement.

This announcement follows early news this week that United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL) and Alaska Airlines (NYSE : ALK) each contributed to a $ 35 million fundraiser for ZeroAvia. United also announced plans to purchase up to 100 engines from the manufacturer.

In October, Alaska Air Group signed a development agreement with ZeroAvia for their powertrains for use in their Dash 8-400. De Havilland Canada’s letter of intent will improve ZeroAvia’s ability to deliver its powertrain in a timely manner.

Dave Riggs, de Havilland Canada’s Chief Transformation Officer, called the partnership a « climate friendly » option for their customers.

ZeroAvia aims initially on aircraft with a range of 500 miles and 10 to 20 seats that can be used in all commercial market segments. The company suggested that those raised funds will allow it to work towards the 40- to 80-seat aircraft segment, first for turboprops in 2026 and then for regional jets by 2028.

Hopes for its ZA600 program ZeroAvia to fly a 19-seat aircraft in a hybrid configuration in the coming weeks and fly a hydrogen-electric propulsion aircraft in 2022.

For the ZA2000 program, the goal is to have full-thrust ground demonstrations of 1.8-MW in 2022 Engines, obtain certification of ZA2000 engines for 40- to 80-seat 700 nm aircraft by 2026, and expand ZA2000 application to 90 aircraft by 2027.
