Danish defender Rasmus Nicolaisen’s Pompey debut deserves praise from Kenny Jackett

The Blues boss was delighted with the central defender’s contribution to last night’s comfortable 3-0 victory at Southend

Nicolaisen received his first appearance in a third backstroke alongside Paul Downing and James Bolton

With 10 changes and a new 3-4-3 system, Pompey reached the round of 16 of the EFL Trophy thanks to goals from Ronan Curtis (two) and John Marquis

« He’s given us a balance, wants to compete in the air – which is obviously a big deal for a center-back – and has achieved a thing or two in the opposition box

« Naturally, being the left footer gives you some good pass options that we sometimes missed

« He had a very, very good start with two weeks of training and then the game at Southend He settled down really well

« It’s always good for him to play and learn everyone’s names, to know the club – and he’s settled down well »

For last night’s trip to Roots Hall, the regular partnership between center-half Jack Whatmough and Sean Raggett has rested

This allowed Nicolaisen to line up for Pompey for the first time since arriving from Denmark on a season-long loan

He will now compete with the duo for Saturday’s clash with struggling MK Dons at Fratton
