FX’s New Docuseries « The Secrets of Hillsong » to Feature First Interviews with Ousted Pastors

FX has announced a new four-part docuseries titled « The Secrets of Hillsong, » which will feature the first interviews with Carl and Laura Lentz since they were ousted as pastors of the megachurch. The series is based on reporting from Vanity Fair’s Alex French and Dan Adler about Hillsong, which attracted celebrities like Justin and Hailey Bieber and Kylie and Kendall Jenner before being exposed for involvement in misconduct, including marital infidelity and child sexual abuse.

The docuseries will also include interviews with former congregants and others connected to the church, offering new insights into how decades of scandal and corruption went unchecked within the church and what it meant for the community left in their rubble. Stacey Lee directs the series, which hails from Scout Productions and Vanity Fair Studios. Executive producers include French, Adler, David Collins, Joel Chiodi, Michael Williams, Rob Eric, Agnes Chu, and Sarah Amos.

Uncovering the Abuse of Power in Hillsong

Vanity Fair’s mission to uncover stories that contend with power and the people who hold it is at the core of « The Secrets of Hillsong. » Thanks to the stellar reporting by Alex French and Dan Adler and the courage of those who stepped forward to share their experiences, the docuseries sheds light on the systemic abuse of power over people seeking faith and community, which was central to the Hillsong collapse.

Head of documentary at Scout Productions, Joel Chiodi, said that the depth and clarity of the project owed to the excellent reporting of Vanity Fair and the perspectives of those speaking out for the first time. He added that the docuseries offers new insights into how decades of scandal and corruption went unchecked within the church and what it meant for the community left in their rubble.

« The Secrets of Hillsong » premieres on May 19 at 10 p.m. with two episodes, followed by two more episodes on May 26.

The Importance of Speaking Out

The courage of those who stepped forward to share their experiences is crucial in uncovering the abuse of power in institutions like Hillsong. The docuseries offers a well-rounded and definitive story of Hillsong, thanks to the voices of those speaking out for the first time and unprecedented access to Carl and Laura Lentz.

The series sheds light on the importance of speaking out against abuse of power and corruption, especially in institutions that are meant to provide faith and community. « The Secrets of Hillsong » is a must-watch for anyone interested in understanding the inner workings of megachurches and the dangers of unchecked power.
