Under fierce questioning from an accuser’s lawyers, Ghislaine Maxwell repeatedly denied in a 2016 deposition that she recruited girls for sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to a transcript of the proceedings made public Thursday

The 2016 transcripts are Maxwell’s only significant public record of what she said she did for Epstein, her former boyfriend and employer

Maxwell was also asked in the deposition if she considered herself Epstein’s girlfriend from 1999 to 2002, which included the period when Giuffre said she was abused – I don’t know if I would have ever characterized myself as his girlfriend, – Maxwell said

Later in the proceedings, Maxwell was asked if she was Epstein’s girlfriend after meeting him in 1991 and called it a tricky questionat ????

– There were times when I would have liked to think of myself as his girlfriend, – ???? she said

Giuffre claimed in the lawsuit that Maxwell and Epstein made her a sex slave to the fund manager when she was 16 Giuffre sued Maxwell in 2015 for calling his account – obvious lies ???? The case was then settled for an undisclosed amount

Maxwell, when asked if she was looking for a woman to carry Epstein’s baby in her place, replied that it sucksat ????

– I never asked anyone to carry a baby for me, – she said, adding that she didn’t remember any baby conversations with Jeffreyâ € ”

She admitted that Epstein bought her a car and loaned her money to buy a townhouse, but said she couldn’t remember details of other gifts She said he wasn’t paying his legal fees The two met in 1991, she says

Maxwell was asked about a January 12, 2015, email from Epstein in which he suggested that he offer « rewards » to Giuffre’s friends and family to contradict her story – Absolutely not, – Maxwell responded when asked if she had ever offered such a reward She said she had no idea if Epstein offered a reward

After the deposition, Giuffre’s lawyers wrote to the court to tell him that Maxwell had been so evasive that they needed to question him again Noting that Maxwell claimed that all sexual interactions were with adults, they asked to be ordered to answer their questions again.

Portions of Maxwell’s depositions and other documents related to Epstein were made public in August 2019 A day later, Epstein was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell where he was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges involving girls and women Authorities later said he hanged himself

Lawyers had also argued that making the testimony public could jeopardize Maxwell’s ability to get a fair trial, as jurors could withhold the contents against her A trial is scheduled for July 2021

Maxwell was arrested on July 2 in Bradford, New Hampshire, where authorities said she was in hiding on a property she bought in December in an all-cash transaction with her identity protected She is locked in a Brooklyn jail after the judge in her criminal case called her an unacceptable flight risk

Maxwell told lawyers his work at Epstein included hiring assistants, architects, decorators, cooks, cleaners, gardeners, pool members and pilots as part of the maintenance of six houses, according to the transcript, which occupies 418 pages

Giuffre, who has been one of Epstein’s most visible accusers, and the Miami Herald newspaper, which investigated Epstein’s conduct and successful submission in 2007 to avoid sex trafficking charges at the level federal, had sought loosening

Epstein committed suicide at age 66 in August 2019 in a Manhattan jail pending trial on federal sex trafficking charges announced the previous month

He had previously escaped federal prosecution by pleading guilty in 2008 to prostitution charges in the state of Florida, a deal now widely seen as too lenient

Giuffre said she was trafficked by Epstein and forced to have sex with her friends, including the British Prince when she was 17
