Manchester United sign Jonny Evans on short-term deal

Manchester United have made their second signing of the transfer window, with the arrival of Jonny Evans on a short-term deal. The veteran centre-back has been training at Carrington over the summer to keep fit after being released from Leicester City. Evans impressed Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff, leading to his signing. He will take part in the Edinburgh and San Diego legs of the tour, filling in for injured defensive duo Tyrell Malacia and Rhys Bennett.

New squad number confirmed for Jonny Evans

As Jonny Evans joins Manchester United on a short-term deal, he has been assigned a new squad number. The centre-back will wear No.27 during his stay, a number previously occupied by left-back Alex Telles. This confirms that Telles is likely to leave the club, as he has been marked as a must-sell. Evans previously wore No.23 and No.6 during his first stint with United, but both numbers are currently occupied by Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez, respectively.

Evans is expected to make his second debut for United in the friendly match against Lyon, coming on in the second half alongside Will Fish. Manager Erik ten Hag is likely to change the entire starting XI at half-time, as he did in the previous friendly against Leeds United. Evans will have the opportunity to showcase his skills and fitness during his time with the club.
