Liverpool could be tempted to sell midfielder Fabinho this summer, with the Brazilian having had an indifferent season in terms of form. The 29-year-old has been a mainstay in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side since signing from AS Monaco in 2018, but his drop-off this season has been alarming at times. With a valuation of $55m, Liverpool could be tempted to cash in on Fabinho and replace him with a younger, cheaper option. One potential replacement could be Sofyan Amrabat of Fiorentina, who has been linked with Liverpool and Tottenham. At 26 years old and valued at $27m, Amrabat could be a bargain for whoever wins the race for his signature.
Amrabat played a starring role for Morocco in the World Cup last year, with his all-action performances catching the eye. He has been operating at a high level this season, with his passing acumen particularly impressive. Amrabat is in the top eight per cent of players in his position in the past year across Europe’s top five leagues for completed passes and the top 12 per cent for progressive passes. Fabinho, nicknamed ‘the lighthouse’ and ‘the hoover’ for Liverpool, has shown signs of decline this season, and Klopp may regret not taking a difficult but potentially rewarding decision for the long-term in replacing him while the 29-year-old can still command a sizable fee.
Liverpool will likely have a lot of business to do in the transfer market this summer to ensure that Klopp’s squad gets the revamp it requires ahead of next season. The Reds may need to be canny in the transfer market and sell one midfield stalwart to replace him with a younger, cheaper option. Amrabat could be a good fit for Liverpool, and whoever wins the race for his signature could potentially get themselves a bargain. Klopp may have more pressing concerns this summer, such as replacing outgoing midfielders James Milner, Naby Keïta, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, and Arthur Melo, but replacing Fabinho could be a long-term solution for Liverpool.
