The San Diego Padres stayed busy Sunday, completing a trade for Boston Red Sox slugger Mitch Moreland.

Moreland, 34, figures to serve as San Diego’s full-time designated hitter for the stretch run. The Padres have been interchanging Greg Garcia, Ty France and Josh Naylor in the role, to decent results. Moreland, though, provides a steady option with a proven history of production.

The veteran is off to a hot start this season. Through 22 games, he’s hitting .328/.430/.746 with eight homers and 21 RBIs. He’ll join a lineup that is currently locked in thanks to Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers.

The Chicago Cubs added depth to their lineup, acquiring designated hitter Jose Martinez from the Tampa Bay Rays for two players to be named later.

Designated hitter Jose Martinez has been traded to the Chicago Cubs, sources tell ESPN. Two PTBNLs headed back to Tampa Bay. The Cubs get a lefty masher and the Rays now may get to give more ABs to Randy Arozarena, whom they acquired with Martinez in a trade this offseason.

Martinez, 32, is hitting .239/.329/.388 in 2020. Of more interest to the Cubs, he’s a .319/.392/.554 career hitter against left-handed pitching. That should make him an effective platoon option for manager David Ross.

The San Diego Padres bulked up their bullpen Saturday, completing a trade for Kansas City Royals reliever Trevor Rosenthal.

Kansas City will receive top outfield prospect Edward Olivares and a player to be named later. ESPN’s Jeff Passan was the first to report the trade.

The San Diego Padres are in agreement on a deal to acquire reliever Trevor Rosenthal from Kansas City, sources tell ESPN. Arguably the best reliever on the market is headed to the Padres, whose beleaguered bullpen will get a huge boost from a revitalized Rosenthal.

Rosenthal’s resurgence has been one of the best stories in MLB this season. He had been a successful reliever for the St. Louis Cardinals, recording 121 saves and 3.46 ERA between 2012-17. Unfortunately, he was sidelined by Tommy John surgery at the end of the 2017 season.

Rosenthal struggled upon his return last season. In 22 appearances between the Washington Nationals and Detroit Tigers, he posted a 13.50 ERA with 26 walks in 15 innings. This season, Rosenthal has bounced back with a 3.29 ERA in 14 appearances.

He will immediately fill a key role in San Diego’s bullpen. Closer Kirby Yates will likely miss the remainder of the season after undergoing elbow surgery.

Veteran infielder Tommy La Stella was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Angels will receive utility player Franklin Barreto.

La Stella, 31, hasn’t developed into the star player many envisioned he would during his prospect days, however, he has carved out a productive role as a part-time player during prior stints with the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs.

Since joining the Angels last season, La Stella has slashed .289/.353/.483 with 20 home runs. He earned his first All-Star selection last season.

La Stella will continue filling a part-time role for the first-place A’s. The Angels, on the other hand, are clearly ready to sell after beginning the season 10-22.
