The film stars Maisie Williams (as Wolfsbane), Henry Zaga (Sunspot), Blu Hunt (Mirage), Charlie Heaton (Cannonball) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Magik) as misfit teenagers with superpowers who have to team up to fight their way out of a mysterious asylum.
Originally intended to be a spinoff for Fox’s « X-Men » movie franchise, « New Mutants » has traveled a rough and complicated road since its initial release date of April 2018. It was delayed to get out of the way of fellow mutant superhero film « Deadpool 2, » and then to give it a buffer from the X-Men movie « Dark Phoenix. »
It was bumped again after Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019 and then due to COVID-19 before garnering its current Friday theatrical release date.
The Hollywood Reporter said in its review that the film « will provide an eye-rolling case of déjà vu. »
« Generic and, at its best, straining to be heartfelt, director Josh Boone’s adaptation of the Marvel spin-off comic series is a Marvel movie spinoff in its own right, making vague references to the X-Men franchise but attempting to stand on its own, » the review says. « Unfortunately it rarely does, even if the film’s trio of young and tough female leads manages to give your typically male-dominated genre something of a feminine twist. »
Canadian newspaper « The Globe and Mail » had a review headline that didn’t mince words: « The New Mutants will make you hate the X-Men more than Magneto. »
The review’s author, Barry Hertz, described the movie on Twitter as « a giant elevator pitch of an X-Men movie that leads directly to the sub-basement of originality. »
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an 18% Tomatometer score and a 57% audience score as of Friday at 10 a.m. ET.
« With no real connection to the X-Men universe aside from the characters being mutants, I still found it frustrating how boring it was and how uninteresting the characters are given the quality of most of the previous X-Men films, » user @MKEMovieMan tweeted.
« as a diehard new mutants fan: don’t watch new mutants. just don’t do it stop supporting this trainwreck of a movie, » user @kindlestuck tweeted.
The lack of early United States-based reviews is largely due to the coronavirus pandemic, as some media outlets are opting not to send their writers to movie theaters.
For example, in lieu of a review, The A.V. Club explained it wouldn’t be seeing or reviewing the film anytime soon due to Disney’s lack of an advance screening or a digital review link.
« That’s a risk The A.V. Club will not be taking to review a movie, any movie, » A.V. Club’s article stated.
