News from the world – AU – Concept art for the next prequel series GREMLINS GREMLINS: SECRETS OF THE MOGWAI – GeekTyrant

As we previously reported, HBO Max is producing an animated Gremlins prequel series titled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai A concept art piece has been shared that teases what we can expect from the series. and as you can see, it features a young version of the lovable character Gizmo as well as a young version of M Wing, the elderly Chinese character from the original film

The series will consist of 10 episodes, and is being developed by Once Upon a Time and Gotham writer Tze Chun Here is the synopsis posted previously for the series:

Set in 1920s Shanghai, the series will tell how Sam Wing, 10, (future store owner, M Wing in the 1984 film) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo set out on a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes fighting, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. In their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins

The director of the original film, Joe Dante, is helping to develop the new project as a consultant, and he previously spoke about the series saying how happy he is with the way it is going:

« Yeah, I’m doing consultations on this It’s good It’s gonna be good, yeah I’m very happy with the way it’s going It’s a prequel It goes back to the character Mr. Wing when he was a kid and when he first discovered Mogwai It’s set in China in the 1920s, it’s lively and it’s very big in the sense that if you tried to shoot it like a theatrical movie it would be outrageously expensive But in the ‘animation, you get away with almost anything you can think of and it probably won’t happen until 2021 or maybe late 2020 It’s for HBO Max, a new streaming variant of HBO I think it’s for is a really smart way to come back to that I think they found it pretty hard to do a sequel to Gremlins 2, because of the way I did it And they just never could really figure out how to do it I so think this is a great way to put the franchise back in the spirit t people « 

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is produced by Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Sam Register, with Tze Chun and Brendan Hay as co-executive producers

It will be interesting to see what the final product looks like. However, I am excited about this series and can’t wait to see this story come to life
