SAS Australia star Mitchell Johnson reveals battle with depression during questioning

The former cricketer opened up about his long-term battle with depression while being asked about the grueling show

Viewers got a closer look at cricketer Mitch Johnson in grueling third episode of SAS Australia after the 38-year-old opened up about his long-term battle with depression

Johnson, a former Australian fast bowler, fought during the episode for failing on a sniper mission

The task was to be thrown into a simulated war zone, disoriented, and try to determine if the shooter was an enemy or a friend

The DS then took him for questioning to find out not only why he failed the task, but also why it had affected him so much

« In 2011 in South Africa I got to the point where I didn’t like being a professional cricketer, » he said.

« I didn’t like being watched and judged all the time I just took it all personally I was physically exhausted and so was I mentally »

SAS instructor Mark Billingham asked what his motivation was to be on the show in the first place

« Growing up the army came to our school and I remember they tried to recruit in grade 12 and I remember I almost joined the army six months after I finished high school But then cricket for me – I got really lucky with that « 

SAS instructor Ollie Ollerton told him they noticed a change in behavior after failing the sniper challenge

During one of the most beautiful interrogations, Mark told him that he shouldn’t have taken failure so personally

« I sometimes fight with confidence and I am in this transition now where I have not played cricket for 2 years »

When asked if he found this transition difficult, he replied, « Yeah I found out I had depression I think depression was something that I have had even for a long time. younger age Cricket kind of blocked things it kind of hid the depression But there were a lot of times you would go back to your room you are away from your family and you start to dwell on things Thanks to my cricket career i just dealt with now It’s just about me moving forward now, taking on myself, being active and keep my mind moving « 

Johnson is a former cricketer who played all forms of the game until his retirement from cricket in 2015

He is married to former karate model and black belt Jessica Baratich Johnson They share a daughter named Rubika Anne Johnson, born in 2012
