After 44 years of business, The Fours is permanently closing its Boston location, the sports bar announced Monday.

“It has been our honor to call the City of Champions our home,” management said in a statement. “We have the best fans. Period. Thank you for making The Fours part of your traditions over the years.”

A stone’s throw away from TD Garden, The Fours was a popular watering hole for Celtics and Bruins fans, with team photographs and framed jerseys lining the walls. The menu featured a “Hall of Famers” section with sandwiches named after famous Boston athletes, such as the “Bobby Orr,” charbroiled steak tips and melted cheese on a braided roll, and the “Larry Bird,” a grilled chicken pesto panini.

“To the TD Garden, Celtics, and Bruins staff, we especially thank you for your loyalty and support,” the bar’s statement continued. “You became more than customers to us over the years. You are our friends and family.”

Not only did fans stop by pre- and post-game, but team personnel and Garden staff members did, too. Celtics general manager Mike Zarren, a longtime customer, often gathered folks there during the annual Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, for example.

On Twitter, Zarren expressed his sadness over the decision to close and said he will “try to see if there’s some way to save the place.”

I have been a mess since last night when I learned of the closure of @TheFoursBar, my home away from home. I think there have been fewer than 8 C’s home games since 2001 where a member of my family hasn’t been there postgame… More thoughts & thanks in the image. ? pic.twitter.com/OXJlgwwp5f

With no games or events at TD Garden since March, manager Tony Costa previously expressed concerns about the business amid the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to offering takeout, The Fours had reopened its patio in June. Management did not specify a reason behind the decision to shut down.

“We extend our sincerest thanks to all of you, our loyal customers, who have supported us for so many years,” the statement continued. “You have made The Fours such a treasured place and we are forever grateful for the wonderful memories we have made together.”
