DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have traded veteran outfielder Cameron Maybin to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor-league infielder Zack Short.
Maybin, 33, signed with the Tigers as a free agent at the start of spring training in February. It was his third stint with the Tigers, who drafted him in the first round in 2005.
Maybin hit .244 (.726 OPS) in 45 plate appearances as a reserve outfielder in 2020. He had one home run and four doubles.
The Tigers still have four outfielders on the roster — Christin Stewart, JaCoby Jones, Victor Reyes and Jorge Bonifacio — and a handful more in Toledo who could fill the roster spot vacated by Maybin.
“Short can help a team beyond his bat, using his solid speed well on the bases and playing quality defense at a number of positions,” MLB Pipeline wrote. “He has a ceiling as a Zack Cozart-type regular but more likely will be a slugging utilityman.”
Drafted in the 17th round out of Sacred Heart University in 2016, Short rapidly moved up the minor-league ladder, drawing walks, hitting for a little bit of power and playing good defense. He played primarily at shortstop, but has also worked at second and third.
