Vancouver Weather: Sunny but smoky

A special weather statement for poor air quality related to the wildfires in the U.S. remains in effect Saturday, with ‘widespread smoke’ expected throughout the day.

VANCOUVER, B.C.: Saturday, Sept. 12. Today’s weather is expected to be sunny, but with “widespread smoke” throughout the day and highs of 21 C and 24 C inland, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. An alert for poor air quality related to the smoke from the wildfires in Washington and Oregon remains in effect Saturday.

The agency warns that fine particulate matter, also known as PM2.5, refers to airborne solid or liquid droplets with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less. PM2.5 can easily penetrate indoors because of its small size.

The agency says anyone with chronic underlying medical conditions or acute infections such as COVID-19 should postpone or reduce outdoor physical activity until the advisory is lifted, especially if breathing feels uncomfortable.

Overnight, expect to see some clouds roll in near midnight, along with the widespread smoke and a low of 13 C. On Sunday, expect a mix of sun and cloud, but with the wildfire smoke continuing, and a high of 22 C. The week starts out with a mix of sun and cloud Monday and then there’s a chance of showers overnight and again on Tuesday.

Today: Sunny. Widespread smoke. High 21 C except 24 C inland. Humidex 26 C except 28 C inland. UV index 6 or high.

Tomorrow: A mix of sun and cloud. Widespread smoke. High 22 C. Humidex 26 C. UV index 6 or high.
