Weltnachrichten – AU – Die Avalanches « We will always love you » is another patchwork dream

Our years between albums are considered a Stakhanovite labor rate for Australian producers The Avalanches, who received huge acclaim for their miraculous debut « Since I » Left You in 2000 and didn’t make it to Wildflower in the year 2016 to follow.

Alcoholism, not perfectionism, seems to be the main problem. Founding member Robbie Chater had already experienced a spell in a detox facility before the first album came out, and his last trip to rehab was in early 2017. But it’s also easy to believe that music like hers lasts incredibly long. Since I left you, an estimated 3. Woven 500 samples, an extraordinary Technicolor collage that combined the sadness of The Beach Boys in the sun and sand with the carefree sample chomping of the early De La Soul and acted as a joyful sibling of DJ Shadows Dunkelheit, which pioneered the 1996 exercise in vinyl plundering, end troducing.

After finally introducing themselves again with the equally nifty Wildflower, there’s less pressure on this third release to live up to their myth. On paper, it already looks like a different type of creation, with a long list of guest musicians stopping by to add original contributions. Neneh Cherry, Johnny Marr, Tricky, Jamie xx, Mick Jones from The Clash and Sananda « Terence Trent D’Arby » Maitreya are all here and a lot more.

Nevertheless, this patchwork feeling is still dominant. There are 25 tracks over 70+ minutes with no gaps in between and it feels like a lot more. Nobody interrupts as effectively as this group. A beautiful piano melody appears, like on Dial D for Devotion, with its spoken word contribution by Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and disappears so that the listener is in thin air.

Being aware that these songs are unlikely to be heard at a gig or in a nightclub anytime soon, the feeling is muted. The past fondness for crazy novelties like Frontier Psychiatrist and Frankie Sinatra – wrongly their biggest hits – has largely disappeared, though the presence of a retro disco number called Music Makes Me High has little imagination.

The album opens with an emotional voice that says, « It’s hard to be so far apart . . . all this distance. Songs like Interstellar Love and Gold Sky are relaxed, slightly psychedelic and a dream in good headphones. With repeated listening, new details keep bubbling up. Two decades later, they’re still incredibly good at it.
