Exclusive: The two characters unite over shared feelings for the Doctor in Revolution of the Daleks.
Thursday 3rd. December 2020, 8:00 a.m.
As any Doctor Who fan with a pulse and an internet connection knows, John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness is returning to the TARDIS. The immortal Time Agent will join the fight in the upcoming Dalek special revolution.
And while fans eagerly await Jack’s reunion with the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) about a decade after they last shared the screen, Barrowman has now revealed that his character’s closest relationship in the episode is indeed with another character – Mandip Gill’s companion Yaz, whose search for the missing Doctor Jack inspires.
« The one thing is that Jack always seems to be able to get someone out who is as much about the doctor as he is, » Barrowman told the Radio Times.
« So I love it when you write the scenes … without going into too much detail. Mandip and I had a wonderful scene we did together, in which we express how we both feel.

« He’s someone who lost his doctorate, too, » Gill told the Radio Times. “He’s not exactly human, so I’m not sure if I would have immediately thought, ‘Oh yeah, it’ll be someone like this who can relate to it. ‘I would have thought Graham or Ryan would go. ‘I really love these trips and I don’t want to go home. ‘
« Jacks has an amazing energy that is very different from Yaz, Ryan and Graham, » she added.
“But to a certain extent he has the same relationship with the doctor as we do. ”
In other words, it sounds like Barrowman’s Captain Jack works a bit like Elisabeth Sladen’s Sarah-Jane Smith in School Reunion in this episode, showing a current companion her future fate – like so many others the doctor left behind Has.
Some references to this can be found in the special trailer for Doctor Who Christmas, in which Jack feels sorry for an unknown character about the abandoned fate of many companions and in combination with the confirmed exit for Gill’s co-stars Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole sounds like that could be a main theme of the episode.
Speaking to the wider press, Gill said, “Jack also has his own relationships with being with the doctor and losing the doctor. So the things you see – he and Yaz really connect with each other.
« It almost feels like he’s the only person who understands what it feels like to lose [the doctor]. « . So he explains to [Yaz] things that I think are reassuring to her. ”
It’s clear that Yaz and Jack will form a strong screen duo when the episode hits on New Years Day – and off-screen Barrowman and Gill got close too, even if it was just to fight off the worst of Welsh weather …
« I’ll say that night that she was freezing and I kept her in my jacket . . . I put the coat around her and me, « said Barrowman.
« Because it’s obviously the hero’s cloak, it can wrap itself around two people. And we stood there freezing off our bums and shooting in Wales. But love every minute of it. ”
« As an actor, John was an ace on the set. He brings a different level of energy, ”added Gill. “It brought a new dynamic into the set and into the scenes and things.
« And he shared his coat, that was nice of him. That was really cool. I didn’t know him that much, but he said, « It’s really cold. Get in my coat. I thought I wasn’t going to turn down John Barrowman. « I just got in. ”
