Troy Herfoss took another win in the Australian Superbike race at Wakefield Park but couldn’t prevent championship leader Wayne Maxwell from securing a solid second.

Herfoss had moved up to third place in the overall standings by winning the morning start of the Kawasaki Superbike round 2, but was still 22 points behind Maxwell before the last three races of the season.

That resulted in a cat-and-mouse competition at the head of the field in Race 2, in which Herfoss purposely drove his Penrite Honda slowly to put Maxwell under pressure from the chase.

The Goulburn-American was actually shot away from first position, with Maxwell on his Boost Mobile Ducati taking second place ahead of Glenn Allerton (BMW) and Cru Halliday (Yamaha). .

Although Herfoss enjoyed the clear air, he was never more than two tenths ahead of the championship leader and was behind when Maxwell went inside on lap 5 at Turn 2.

The man on # 47 increased the pace and held it up until Herfoss got through on Turn 10 (last corner) just before halfway through the 18-lap affair.

By then, Allerton was 1. 3s away from the front of the field but he and Halliday were back with the leaders within four more laps.

Herfoss opened the wick in the final phase and won with 0. 694s over Maxwell, Allerton third in another 1. 876s back.

Halliday was fourth from Mike Jones (Ducati), who was fifth after an early move to Bryan Staring (Kawasaki). .

The latter drove most of the way in sixth place, but took the checkered flag in ninth place after a penultimate lap at turn 10.

Sixth to eighth were Aiden Wagner (Yamaha), Josh Waters (Suzuki) and Arthur Sissis (Suzuki), while Glenn Scott (Kawasaki) rounded off the top 10.

At the top of the overall standings, Maxwell is now 17 points ahead of Herfoss, who climbed six points ahead of Halliday into second place.

Qualifying 1 for the official third and final lap of the season starts tomorrow at 09:50 a.m. local time / AEDT.
