It was a mess in qualifying for the FIA Formula 2 Championship on Friday at the Sakhir Circuit’ Outer Loop ‘when Yuki Tsunoda took the pole, the two championship candidates were buried in the pack.

Tsunoda recovered from a very difficult qualifying a week earlier when he retired from practice early and took his fourth F2 pole position.

The Red Bull Junior qualified with 0. 1s faster than 2021 Haas F1 drivers Nikita Mazepin and Jehan Daruvala, who rounded off the top three.

« I’m really happy, » said Tsunoda. “Especially from last week in qualifying. I made a big mistake and I really felt sorry for the team.

“I’m very pleased with the urge to thank Carlin for pole position today. I am really happy. ”

The vast majority of the top 10 did their fastest laps in the first 10 minutes of the session as the rest of qualifying featured a series of spins and red flags.

Mick Schumacher was buried in the pack for the first half of the session, and when Luca Ghiotto turned in the gravel and caused a red flag four minutes before the end, the German had everything to do.

In the closing stages on the way to Turn 10, Schumacher got tangled up with Roy Nissany, which resulted in the French-Israeli losing control and spitting back into Schumacher to tear off the rear wing from the German Prema Racing machine.

The incident led to a red flag, only one minute left, the session was not restarted, Schumacher starts at 18 . . .

Ilott couldn’t get a groove around the outer loop and qualified ninth in his UNI-Virtuosi, his second worst performance of the year. Even so, he has a great opportunity to nibble on Schumacher’s championship lead later in the race.

Schumacher’s Prema team-mate Robert Shwarzman did much better, he qualified fourth ahead of Felipe Drugovich, Christian Lundgaard, Artem Markelov, Dan Ticktum, Ilott and Louis Deletraz.

The penultimate race of the F2 season starts this evening at 11 a.m.. 5 p.m. AEDT and will be shown live on Fox Sports 506.
