Weltnachrichten – AU – Stroll says he had « no chance » of reaching the third quarter with the wrong tires · RaceFans

. . Lance Stroll said a "major miscommunication" left him on the wrong set of tires in the second part of qualifying.

. .

Lance Stroll said he had « no chance » of qualifying in the top 10 for the Bahrain Grand Prix after being put on the wrong tires during the second quarter.

Stroll said he was at a disadvantage at the end of the second quarter because he had to run a used set of the media link. He had already ridden his other two sets in Q1 and earlier in Q2 before the session was on the red flag.

After the red flag, the team sent him for a single run on a used set of medium tires. Stroll felt that he still had time to do another run with new tires.

« We had the wrong tires on the car, » explained Stroll after qualifying, « but it wasn’t anyone’s fault.

« I think there was timing miscommunication. I thought we had time for two runs. We only had time for one run and it was on an old set of media because we used one in the first quarter and then did a lap before the red flag in the second quarter.

Stroll’s team mate Sergio Perez entered the third quarter and qualified fifth. Team principal Otmar Szafnauer said that Stroll should have been sent on a new set of soft tires retrospectively to make sure he reached the final stage of qualifying.

« With Lance in the second quarter, there was a simple misunderstanding caused by the red flag and the shortened session, » he said. “When Lance hit the track – on used media – there was only time for a run and no time to use softs too.

« Had this been more obvious, Lance might have left the softs on instead. Because Lance had also used a range of media in the first quarter, no new media was available in the second quarter. ”

Sure, slightly worse tires will take you to 13th. space. You can’t always be amazingly lucky, sometimes it’s up to you to prove yourself. Whenever there is pressure, you are almost / or the last (now third or even second best car).

So the misunderstanding was solely with Strolls? He wasn’t put on the « wrong » tires. He should have just known he’d already used both sets and should just have carried on like all the other drivers (who got through Q2 on media). .

His misfortune with tires goes into the realm of mathematical impossibility. This has never been addressed by science. How is it possible for one driver to make so many bad tire decisions?
