Bayern Munich returned to the Bundesliga when goals from Kingsley Coman, Robert Lewandowski and Douglas Costa sealed a 3-1 win in Stuttgart on Saturday.

The champions were led to a 1-1 draw by Werder Bremen last weekend and although normal service at the Mercedes-Benz Arena was resumed, they didn’t quite have it in their own way against Pellegrino Matarazzo.

Stuttgart could easily have contributed to Tanguy Coulibaly’s start in the middle of the first half, but Hansi Flick’s men were able to achieve the maximum number of points before the break thanks to fine hits from Coman and Lewandowski and a late third from Douglas.

The result means that Bayern have won 26 of their last 29 top games and built a two-point lead at the Bundesliga summit after Borussia Dortmund lost points at home to Cologne.

Bayern, who hit the post after three minutes through Lewandowksi, fell in the 20th. Minute back when Manuel Neuer failed to cut Silas Wamangituka’s cross and Coulibaly scored his first professional goal.

Philipp Forster came shortly afterwards to extend the lead of the hosts, shot just wide of the post from close range and then shot straight at Neuer after he had been played through without a mistake.

These errors went back to haunt Stuttgart. Bayern moved seven minutes before the break when Coman shot into the lower left corner after a flowing counterattack.

Forster then ruled out an attempt after Coulibaly fouled Neuer before Lewandowski put Bayern in the lead during the break in the first half. The Polish international drilled past Gregor Kobel, just outside the penalty area.

The game slowed down dramatically after the restart, and the next sight of the goal wasn’t until the 72nd. Minute when Orel Mangala’s attempt was deflected just wide of the goal.

Waldemar Anton and Mateo Klimowicz then came close to Stuttgart, but Douglas secured Bayern a 19th three minutes before the end. Victory in 20 games for Bayern and shot into the lower corner from 15 yards to score his first goal since returning to the club on loan from Juventus.

Bayern weren’t at their most devastating side, but they still had enough quality to hold off the Stuttgart threat. The hosts will feel like they should have gotten something out of the game as they had 15 shots on goal. Your problem? Only four of them were there.

Flick will be happy that his team can win 3-1 in a game they never really got going. That’s not a good sign for the rest of the Bundesliga.

French international Coman pulled aside with a lush hit and was a constant threat throughout. His support for Lewandowski’s goal was one of four key passes – the most of any player on the field – while completing 88. 9 percent of his passes, that was the second highest of all Bayern starters.

Forster missed two golden chances in the first half to extend Stuttgart’s lead, while also failing to make a single key pass and losing the ball 14 times before being substituted within the last 15 minutes.

Flick is likely to rest some of his stars for Tuesday’s Champions League visit to Atletico Madrid after sealing their progress to the last 16 as Group A winners against Salzburg mid-week. On Saturday she will then receive RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. One day later, Stuttgart travels to Werder Bremen.
