As the son of legendary Australian boxer Kostya, it would have been an all too easy person to inflate yourself.

Instead, the 26-year-old – now on the brink of a world championship title – is trading his currency with the most steely intensity.

« It’s a blessing, » said Tszyu after his upcoming fight with Bowyn Morgan on Wednesday night was expanded into a world title eliminator. « All of this hard work is becoming truth. «

Tszyu only acts absolutely. Not drawn to the high predictions or hyped valor of the martial arts world, Tszyu knows what he can control. He masters it to the nth degree.

When he explains how dominant he is as the most exciting aspiring super welterweight, that’s not puffy. Take it to the bank.

« I’m a big boy in this department. These guys don’t understand, it’s a completely different game, « Tszyu told Wide World of Sports exclusively.

« I’ll come in at 69. 8th. kg but I walk around with 75kg. So I let myself go. The cut is cute to me.

« It’s all about control, control of yourself, control of your opponent. Not many boxers know how to do this.

« I have no problem controlling a fighter and being able to do what I want. «

Then it seems fitting that the port city caused a deluge the night before his Sydney Super Fight, because the prevailing mantra before his clash with Morgan was all about water.

« I want to drown him, » says Tszyu without breaking an eye. « This could be a fight I won’t get hit a single time. «

Stories of 25km daily run during isolation earlier this year and two and a half day stretches of starvation to test his limits, perhaps to explain the level of grit that Tszyu is dealing with.

That brought him so far ahead of Jeff Horn in the dismantling of the former welterweight world champion in August. And that is exactly what brought him to the box to play either against current world champion Patrick Teixeira or against his competitor Brian Castano next year. either way with the title on the line.

« Yeah, sure, » Tszyu replies when asked if he’s surprised that Horn hasn’t been exposed domestically by that night.

« I knew what Horn was going to bring to the table. He brings people into his game. When you create your own game and control your own battle, you can do what you want. Fortunately, that’s in my blood. «

Kostya’s unique old-school Eastern Bloc training methods can be found at the famous Tszyu Boxing Academy in Rockdale, where his son now trains under posters about his father’s accomplishments.

Tszyu still has a record of his father’s accomplishments at his age. Personal bests in squats, cardio and the like are on par – the only big difference is in the maximum bench press. Kostya holds this record.

Power was probably the only thing Tszyu lacked compared to his father’s knockout ability.

« I’ve worked a lot on different things, of course, and one of them is power.

« A lot of people have a good distance, a lot of people have a good speed, a lot of people have a good strength. But your ability to control with your boxing IQ cannot be taught. «
