He’s quick to build a reputation as an A-League poacher, but Carl Robinson, coach of the Western Sydney Wanderers, insists that there are deeper reasons James Troisi and Bernie Ibini chose their respective Leaving clubs.
Troisi broke his deal with Adelaide United earlier this month to sign a two-year deal with Wanderers.
A few days later, Ibini paid off the rest of his Newcastle Jets contract to sign with the Wanderers as well.
The three defects were a big boost for Robinson, who himself quit as coach of the Jets in October to take on the lead role with the Wanderers.
Ibini was previously recruited by Robinson twice – in 2017 with Major League Soccer Club Vancouver Whitecaps and earlier this year with the Jets.
The Jets were furious with Ibini’s departure, while Adelaide also had a sour taste in his mouth when Troisi left.
Lawrie McKinna, executive director of Jets, apologized after asking if Ibini was faking mental health problems to break the contract.
Robinson, who first tried to sign Troisi in 2015, has been criticized in a few areas for poaching the players but said people didn’t know the full story.
« It makes me laugh, » said Robinson when the subject of the players who defected him was brought up.
« James in Adelaide – he’s a good person, a good player. He had a contract there. If they wanted to keep it there, it would surely still be there. So it is not always what it appears from the outside.
« Same situation with Bernie. People say people have contracts, but there’s always a reason a player leaves – as I said with my no. 1 goalkeeper (the Swede Daniel Lopar, who left for family reasons).
« Whether it’s family issues, whether the coach might be the problem, whether it’s a reduction in the salary cap, whether it is a personal salary cut they are talking about – there are reasons.
« It’s not as easy as, ‘Oh, James Troisi signed for Robbo because Robbo chased him in 2015. ‘.
« There’s a reason behind it, and when you understand the reason for it and understand why, you’ll find that it was the right move for James and the right move for Adelaide. «
The addition of Ibini and Troisi has given the walkers a much-needed dose of star power after finishing ninth last season.
