A decades-long search for justice for an Australian war hero will be completed today when Teddy Sheean is finally awarded his Victoria Cross.

Governor General David Hurley will present Sheean’s family with the highest military award in the country at a ceremony in Canberra on Tuesday.
Mr. Sheean was 18 years old when he sacrificed his life to defend his compatriots after his ship HMAS Armidale was sunk by a Japanese air raid off the coast of what is now East Timor.

He helped launch several life rafts before firing again at enemy planes despite orders to leave the ship. He kept firing until the Armidale sank, giving others time to flee.
Veterans Secretary Darren Chester said the award marks the culmination of a decades-long pursuit of justice.

Governor Hurley described the decision as « meaningful » to Sheean’s family and the defense community at large.
« Teddy Sheean is an example of the qualities our ministering men and women have shown in conflict throughout history that now define Australia: camaraderie, perseverance, courage and sacrifice, » he said in August.
“By remembering Teddy, recognizing his service, and recognizing his courage, we also preserve the legacy of the generations who have served and shaped our nation. ”
