Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya played top-class cricket for the first time since returning from back surgery more than a year ago. His team was under pressure against Australia at the second ODI here on Sunday.

Two days ago, after the first One-Day International, Pandya, who redesigned his campaign to lighten the strain on his body, said that he would only roll in the « important » games when the time was right is.

Pandya also had a good premiere, conceding just five runs against Steve Smith and Marnus Labuchabugne at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

On either side of the dashing all-rounder, leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and part-time worker Mayank Agarwal were crushed for two borders each when Australia consolidated its position after a rapid start.

In his second run, Pandya only made four runs, with the Australians having difficulty putting his slower balls away.

He tossed his third over and lured Smith into cutting a short and wide shipment that appeared to be part of his plan right into Mohammed Shami.

His delivery step used to be too straightforward, but on Sunday he looked open-chested, which he had been working on to ease the strain on his body. On a day that Indian bowlers were struggling, Pandya returned an impressive number of 1/24 in four overs.

With another 10 months for the ICC T20 World Championship, Pandya had indicated on Friday that bowling is something he wants to do with long-term goals and big events in mind.

Pandya underwent back surgery in the UK last October. His lower back had troubled him since testing in England in 2018.

The operation kept him out of action for almost a year. The all-rounder last played a T20 International at home against South Africa in September 2019.

He then missed the tests against the same opponent, the home series against Bangladesh and the West Indies, a T20I series against Sri Lanka and ODIs against Australia at home, as well as the entire New Zealand tour earlier this year.
