Weltnachrichten – CA – Lactalis takes over the Canadian yogurt business Ultima Foods from Agropur

The transaction is subject to contest approval and is being conducted through Lactalis’ Canadian subsidiary at an undisclosed price. The deal includes the Ultima Foods brands, manufacturing facilities in Granby, Quebec and Delta, British Columbia, and a « leased » distribution center in Longueuil, also in Quebec.

Mark Taylor, President and CEO of Lactalis Canada, said: « As a diversified dairy company in Canada producing and supplying a variety of popular brands, this transaction will and will strengthen Lactalis Canada’s position in the dairy category help key customer partners in both retail and food service to meet the growing consumer demand for yoghurt products. « 

Privately owned Lactalis will inherit around 450 new employees from the deal and the workforce at the subsidiary in Canada to around 3. Increase 500.

Agropur became the sole owner of Ultima Foods in 2017 when it took control of a 50:50 joint venture with Agrifoods International. Ultima Foods owns the iogo and Olympic yogurt brands.

Lactalis has initiated a number of M&A deals recently, particularly in North America. In September the company acquired a number of cheese brands from US food company Kraft Heinz, including Breakstone’s and Athenos.

In 2019, the company bought Ehrmann’s US yogurt business, based in Germany – Ehrmann Commonwealth Dairy – and expanded its own Stonyfield (acquired in 2017) and Siggi’s (acquired in 2018) brands for sale in the country.
