Anthony Hamilton and Ryan Day have tested positive for coronavirus and withdrew from the UK championship.

The couple was supposed to face Xu Si and Jak Jones on the first day of competition on Monday. Xu and Jones now said goodbye for the second round.

Hamilton withdrew from this year’s World Championships in the Crucible because he felt he was endangering his health.

In July, the four-time quarter-finalist said: « Personally, I’m at high risk – I have asthma, so I’ve been hardworking, to say the least, during this suspension.

« I basically shielded. I have not seen anyone. I practiced alone, I washed all my food, cleaned my clothes before going inside, all the business.

« Going into a room with 300 people is against the grain for me. Personally, I will not feel comfortable there. I don’t know why anyone will be comfortable. «

Hamilton has played in subsequent tournaments, however, including losing in the first round of the Northern Ireland Open last week.

In a statement, World Snooker said: « All other players and officials who have been tested so far at the event have had negative results.

« Hamilton and Day will now go through a period of self-isolation and receive support from WST. «
