Cher spoke about the « difficult » moments of her son Chaz’s transition in 2009.

The 74-year-old singing legend gave CNN an open interview as she pondered the aftermath of 51-year-old Chaz Bono’s transition and how she grew as parents during that time.

While Cher has been an advocate of the LGBTQIA community for many decades, she said it was « not easy » for her at first after Chaz made his decision.

Speaking to Christine Amanpour, Cher said of her son who came out before his transition: « It was very dissimilar to me to have a problem with Chaz being gay in the beginning and it went away like that. « 

Cher continued: « Then we talked about transgender people for many years (whether Chaz was). And (he) would say, « No, I don’t want to (transition).

While Cher is proud that he is now living his real life, she admits it was difficult at first.

She continued, « It wasn’t easy. I remember calling and the old (voicemail) message was … on the phone and that was very difficult. « 

Cher said that when it comes to parenting a child who is transgender, there is an important takeaway from the situation, both mentally and emotionally.

Chaz has crossed a number of lines since the transition and became the first transgender person to attend Dancing With The Stars in 2011.

He also appeared on two seasons of the acclaimed FX series American Horror Story and was involved in the Netflix documentary Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen.
