After the collision, the drivers are currently standing still on the southern lane between junction 23 (Haydock Island) and junction 22 (Warrington) this morning (7. December).
The incident was first reported just before 7 am. 30pm and Highways North West have confirmed that drivers have been temporarily stopped.
A spokesman for Highways North West said: « Traffic on the M6 south J23 (Haydock Island # A580) to J22 (Warrington North # A59) has been temporarily halted due to a collision.
It has not yet been confirmed how many vehicles are affected and whether someone has been seriously injured.
Photos of the scene show large amounts of traffic in the area, with motorists lining up in every lane of the freeway.
Travel website INRIX said: « All traffic will be temporarily suspended and due to an accident, traffic on the M6 is traveling south from J23 A580 East Lancashire Road (Haydock) to J22 A49 Winwick Link Road (Newton Le Willows). .
