Newcastle United travel to West Ham to open the Premier League season up with debutants Jamal Lewis and Callum Wilson set to feature

Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of Newcastle United’s first match of the Premier League season.

The Magpies are at the London Stadium to take on David Moyes’ Hammers in a game that looks too tight to call.

United have handed Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and Jeff Hendrick their debuts, with fellow summer arrivals Ryan Fraser and Mark Gillespie on the bench.

United’s pre-season was poor, with back-to-back defeats against Middlesbrough and Stoke in the final week of the campaign. But Newcastle’s business this week has sparked some optimism among fans who also saw the takeover take a twist this week.

But it’s all about the match action this evening, with the match moved to 8pm to be televised on Sky.

Wilson makes a clever run and receives the ball on the edge of the box, he delays and goes to pick out Carroll at the far post.

Callum Wilson giving NUFC something different. It’s what you expect from a striker but presence/mobility/runs/ideas up top are what NUFC lacked at times last season. Not short of confidence and already had four attempts and, position-wise, has had four touches in the opposition box.

The Frenchman is down on the floor – he points to his boot, looks like his sock is split.

Show of great feet here by Wilson as he turns and goes for the top corner.

Good chance this as Bowen finds space – he’s latched on to a Fredericks pass but thankfully scoops it over.

The WHU corner is cleared and booted downfield by ASM – he then chases it.

Such speed. He scares Fredericks into giving the ball away. ASM puts across to Wilson, who then tees it into the box.

It’s a cross from the WHU right and Fornals manages to get something on it.

Carroll flicks it over the head of one and fires it towards goal – deflected just over.

Into the side netting this from Shelvey just inside the box after being played in by Wilson.

West Ham are now playing with a bit more purpose – Fredericks cross headed over by Soucek.

Soucek headed wide of the target as West Ham try to respond to a decent start by Newcastle.

West Ham are struggling to contain United here – and are just letting them come forward.

The Frenchman plays one into the box and the deflection falls to Manquillo but the pull back is cleared.

Shelvey whips in a corner and Carroll rises the highest, just on the penalty spot, but sees his header go over.

Shelvey does really well here in the middle to win the ball, and fire ASM down the left.

Jamal Lewis is played in and his cross falls to Wilson – it’s a half chance this. He swings a boot in it and it flashes wide.

Andy Carroll is dropping a bit deep, so Wilson is having to wait for the play to catch up but United look lively.

United come again with ASM, and it finally falls to the feet of Shelvey who whips a low-one into the box.

It’s off the bar. Ogbonna heads it towards goal from that free-kick, and it’s off the woodwork out.

Referee Stuart Atwell once again has a chat with Carroll as he’s done for a challenge in the air.

Jeff Hendrick and Allan Saint-Maximin wide when West Ham are in possession but often drifting inside when #nufc get on the ball.

Early signs of Jamal Lewis and Javier Manquillo bombing on to offer natural width. Callum Wilson looking lively in early stages.

It looks like a 4-4-2. We also see how it’s going to work. Carroll has knocked it on a few times for Wilson.

Wilson then is played in by Shelvey down the right, the striker has to hold it up and then puts into the box for Carroll – it’s cleared.

Was a nervous moment there – the ref was checking VAR to see if Carroll deserved more than a talking to.
