The police were first called to the junction of Baths Road and Strzelecki Highway in Mirboo North to report an armed carjacking at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday.
It is believed that one man armed with a knife Man threatened another man before he stole his silver Audi.
Police then received reports of an Audi that drove irregularly in the Drouin area just before 9 a.m.
The car was in involved in an accident and the driver got out of the car and is said to have run into officers with a knife.
Paramedics worked on the man, but he could not be rescued and died on the scene.
« Detectives from the homicide squad will investigate, on behalf of the coroner, the exact circumstances monitored by the Professional Standards Command under standard protocol when a police firearm is fired, « a statement from Victoria Police said.
