JTA – The Anti-Defamation League was the first major mainstream Jewish organization to call for Donald Trump’s removal from the US presidency for his role in sparking an armed uprising in the Capitol.
« In our 100-year history, ADL has never called for the recall of the President of the United States, but what happened on Wednesday was inexcusable, » said Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of ADL, in a letter to the Civil Rights Group Membership. « It will forever be remembered as one of the darkest days of American democracy and it makes one thing clear: President Trump is not fit for office and must be removed. »
The mob that stormed the Capitol wanted to prevent Congress from confirming that Joe Biden had won the election. Trump is less than two weeks away from stepping down from the presidency, but his insistence on the raiders, who killed five people in the assault, has led Democrats and some Republicans to recall him, either through resignation or through constitutional means.

The ADL monitors extremist movements, and Greenblatt has included his organization’s memo reports on the links between the insurgency and the far right, including anti-Semitic groups. Greenblatt also contained petitions urging social media companies to remove Trump from their platforms. This is an extension of the ADL’s recent campaign to press Facebook to be more aggressive against hatred.
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum also issued a statement highlighting the US Capitol’s role as a venue for ceremonies for survivors.
“That this sacred space has been desecrated, including by some individuals displaying neo-Nazi, anti-Semitic and white supremacist symbols, some of which glorified the Holocaust, is an affront to all who value democracy and those who work on it to protect them and promote the freedom and dignity of all individuals, ”read the statement. « For Holocaust survivors who have gathered annually at the Capitol for decades to remember the past and who deeply love this nation, this has been particularly painful. »
Democrats are reportedly poised to start impeachment proceedings against Trump next week. It would be the second time Trump has been charged.
