GENEVA: World Health Organization (WHO) executive director of the health emergencies program Mike Ryan said there was no need to prioritize vaccination scheduled for July for athletes competing in the Tokyo Olympics , in the absence of enough doses to vaccinate even the most vulnerable groups.
French National Olympic Committee President Denis Masseglia said earlier in the day that unvaccinated athletes would face major challenges during the Tokyo Olympics , including a 14-day quarantine and regular COVID-19 testing.
According to the reports, the International Olympic Committee was working with WHO to ensure that all athletes received vaccines for the Olympics. « We have to face the reality we are now facing. There are not enough vaccines to care for the most vulnerable, » commented Ryan on the problem.
The WHO expert has emphasized that it is the frontline health workers and the elderly are the first to receive vaccines and that fact in no way diminishes the importance of the Olympics.

Originally slated for 2020, the Summer Olympics were in Japan postponed to July 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
