World news – Adler « express interest » in Ex-Jets Tackling Machine

New York Jets linebacker Neville Hewitt is a free agent affiliated with the Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles are one of four teams to sign linebacker Neville Hewitt. The 27-year-old posted a career high of 134 tackles as a starter for the New York Jets last year.

The other teams that have expressed an interest in Hewitt are the Cincinnati Bengals, the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers (via NFL reporter Manish Mehta). Hewitt left Marshall in 2015 and spent his first three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He has 352 career tackles and 7.5 sacks in 82 games (39 starts).

Hewitt is viewed as a high volume tackle machine, although there is sometimes severe cover requirement. Pro Football Focus presented him with a coverage ratio of 55.2 in 2020, up from a catastrophic 35.9 mark in 2019.

Shaun Bradley, Alex Singleton, T.J. Edwards are the planned starters, with sophomore year Davion Taylor expected to play a bigger role. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman stated last week that he is always striving to improve the roster.

« If there is an opportunity to improve our team we will look, » Roseman told Reporters. « We’ll keep doing that. I would say if the fit is right, we will. »

The Eagles announced that Singleton signed its exclusive rights tender on Thursday that guarantees it will be back in 2021 . The move was a formality as exclusive rights-free agents have two options: negotiate with their current team or suspend the year. Singleton is returning to the $ 850,000 minimum veteran salary.

It’s great value for a man who got strong at the end of last season. Singleton led the Eagles in a total of duels (120) and secured the fiddly recovery for the team leadership with two. More importantly, the 27-year-old showed some degree of grit that made him an instant fan favorite. His 25-yard interception return for a touchdown sealed a Week 4 win against the San Francisco 49ers.

Philadelphia has linebackers at the start of the NFL draft never wanted. You have invested a third round pick (Taylor) in a past year, but generally the position has been largely ignored. There’s one guy in this year’s class, however, who deserves a look: Penn State’s Micah Parsons. The Eagles had scouts on his pro day Thursday.

The 6-foot-3,246-pounder put on a show on his pro day where he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds . He’s the full package, a guy who can play the middle and outside supporters while slamming the quarterback into third place. Parsons recorded 109 tackles (14 due to loss), five sacks and four forced fiddling in 2019 after discontinuing the 2020 campaign due to COVID-19 concerns. He’s been training non-stop since September.

« Just train, don’t take days off, keep striving, » said Parsons of what he’s done. “The only way to get in game shape is to actually play in games. As soon as I get to OTAs and mini camps, I can always get in better shape and play like I used to. I think it will come in time, but once the season starts I’ll be ready. «

In addition to scorching the range, Parsons posted a 34-inch vertical and benched 225 pounds 19 times. The 21-year-old will be on the board when the Eagles pick on selection # 6. He is the top rated linebacker in the draft and even took some handoffs on running back during his pro day.The last time the franchise won a real linebacker in the first round was in 1970 (Steve Zabel).
