Amidst a sharp increase in the number of migrants arriving in the Spanish Canary Islands, hundreds of migrants have been expelled from the camps set up to receive them, forcing them to roam the streets of local villages. Thousands more are said to have been left stranded without food or water.
Military camps have been set up to help overcrowded reception facilities, but local authorities say the government is not doing enough. The island’s president, Antonio Morales, denounced what he called the Interior Ministry’s continued contempt for immigrants and the island, calling for the resignation of officials.. .
Due to economic difficulties, some 17,000 immigrants have arrived in the Canary Islands this year. According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, this is a 1,000 percent increase from 2019.
In 2019, 1,885 migrants drowned in the Mediterranean and the death toll in 2020 rapidly approached a thousand. Just last week, the Spanish NGO OpenArms reported that six people had been killed after releasing a horrific video.
Open Arms, the only NGO permitted to carry out search and rescue missions at the moment, wrote on Twitter:
“Despite the tremendous commitment of our medical team, a six-month-old baby has just passed away. We requested an urgent evacuation for him and the others in dangerous conditions, but it did not work. How much pain and sadness!
The International Criminal Court has filed a lawsuit against the European Union, saying that member states should be prosecuted for the killing of thousands of migrants who drowned in the Mediterranean. In its 245-page document, the ICC says that the European Union’s deterrent-based immigration policy that came into effect after 2014 sacrifices the lives of migrants in distress at sea, to discourage others from seeking safe haven in Europe..
