Physicist Cathy Foley is appointed Australia’s next chief scientist, succeeding Alan Finkel when his five-year tenure ends in December
Dr. Foley, who has spent the past two years as the CSIRO Chief Scientist, is the second woman to be appointed to the position
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that as Australia recovered from the Coronavirus, the role of the chief scientist has never been more important
Mr Morrison said: “Dr. Foley has a big future ahead of us to drive collaboration between industry and the science and research community, as we look to create job opportunities for recovery from COVID-19 and in the future.”
Dr. Foley, whose work has focused on the physics behind superconductors, is an outspoken advocate for attracting more women to STEM fields
Dr. Foley keeps her powder dry on the issue of climate change, which disturbed her ancestors
“I think everyone agrees that climate change is something that must be dealt with and not something with a single solution,” she told reporters in Canberra on Monday.
“We will have to see over a long period a whole bunch of different things and styles that have to go together”
The current chief scientist has attracted some criticism for his suggestion that gas will play a critical role in the transition to renewable energy
“I think it’s my role to figure out how to build on that to be able to make sure we get what is needed in the long term,” said Dr. Foley.
« It’s not like we can switch things overnight, we have to work on achieving that, and have a real methodology that consists of a whole set of components. »
“Dr. Foley has made outstanding contributions to Australian science from discovery to marketing and influencing policy development,” said Academy President John Shane.
