Pete Rozelle, the NFL commissioner in the 60s, comes back to life on screen. ESPN’s 30 for 30 series brings out the latest documentary, « AL Davis vs. The NFL, » starring Davis, the chief owner and general manager of the Oakland Raiders, and his long-running feud with Rozelle. For the latter, it wasn’t just the feud that catapulted him to immense attention. It was one of those decisions he made when the Californian got an immense anti-aircraft gun.
Rozelle did not cancel Sunday NFL games after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. He later said it was the biggest mistake of his life. As the country mourned the loss of its assassinated leader, the NFL honcho strove to come to a decision. After a discussion with the then press secretary of the White House, Pierre Salinger, he finally announced that the games would continue as usual.
That was unprecedented. The president was buried and the world saw it with tears on national television. As for the other sports, high school basketball games were played in Wisconsin on the night of the attack. The NBA and NHL continued games as usual, but the AFL stopped the games. Rozelle, who had made the NFL a mandatory Sunday tradition, was now on two minds.
Salinger spoke to Rozelle from Honolulu Airport and the two men made their decision. « It was traditional in sport for athletes to perform in times of great personal tragedy. At the stadium there was a fair turnout for the Redskins against the Philadelphia Eagles, which showed the love and spirit and even cheered Rozelle a little while the media and players beat up the commissioner.
As a result, Rozelle believed that one Cancellation would probably have been the best decision. There are still some who believe that Rozelle wasn’t wrong to let the games play this weekend.
