Birmingham: Lee Zii Jia shocked two-time world champion Kento Momota to reach the semi-finals of the All England Open on Friday.
The Malaysian beat the world number one 21:16, 21:19 and finished his Japanese opponent’s tournament after a much-anticipated return to international action this week.
The pair blew up until the 11-8 break. From there, Lee kept shooting and matched Momota’s razor-sharp move to win seven direct points and win the first game 21-16.
The 22-year-old drove his advantage home and sat in at break a second game with white knuckles in the empty arena in Birmingham by 11-6.
Lee saw a power cord make its way to 20:19, and he sealed the match against the 2019 champion.
« I’ve never beaten him before, so this is a very special moment for me, » said the Malaysian, who has long been an avid fan of the Japanese player.
« I’ve learned a lot about Momota. Every time when I played him there seems to be a big gap between us.
« I always argue about what strategy to play against him. We worked a lot on that. Today is a big win for us. «
