The head of Australia’s largest crash repair company has resigned for allegedly abusing his corporate expense account.
Andrew Hopkins announced his resignation as group chief executive of the AMA Group on Sunday evening, saying the current legal battle the board has brought against him has become a distraction.
Mr Hopkins successfully petitioned federal court last week for a restraining order that prevented his release after alleging he had not applied for approval for business expenses, including flight and yacht club membership. Mr. Hopkins denies any wrongdoing.
« Unfortunately, I now understand that the current lawsuit is distracting the business and operations of the AMA Group, » Hopkins said in a statement.
« I now believe that it is best to step down from my position as Group CEO to protect the shareholders, employees and customers of the AMA Group.
« Although I categorically reject the allegations made against me, I cannot allow this dispute to affect the operations of the company I have been involved in running since 2015 in an industry in which I have been active for 30 years. »
Mr. Hopkins claims the allegations were motivated by a board battle with colleague Simon Moore over a $ 4 million payment that Mr. Moore’s capital investment firm Colinton Capital requested from AMA as an advisory fee.
Mr Moore declined to comment. Born in the UK, Hopkins founded the Perth-based Gemini Group in 2009, a claims management and vehicle repair company that merged with the AMA Group in 2015
