Almost 35 years ago Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Phantom of the Opera opened in London’s West End and became one of the most successful musicals of all time.
A new production of Cameron Mackintosh’s production will be shown at the Joan Sutherland Theater in Sydney in September and a sell-out season is expected. (The record-breaking UK tour was followed by a seven-year tour of the US that grossed over $ 400 million.)
Based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux, Le Fantôme de L’Opéra, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story the story of a masked figure who lurks under the catacombs of the Paris Opera House and rules terror over all who inhabit it. But when he falls in love with a young soprano, Christine, he dedicates himself to nurturing her talents – and even using cunning methods to achieve her success.
This production will include a new staging and scenic design as well as special effects, including a new realization of the show’s chandelier. There is a cast and orchestra of 65 making it one of the greatest musical productions of all time in Australia. And of course, opera goers will experience the popular score of songs including The Music of the Night, All I Ask You, and Masquerade.
Australian Josh Piterman will play the role of Phantom, as he did in London before production had to be suspended due to the pandemic. His previous credits include participation in the Ten Tenors, Westside Story, Cats and the Carole King Musical.
Phantom of the Opera will be shown at the Sydney Opera House from September 2021. Tickets will be available from April 19th. Here you can join the waiting list.
